Iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group Ltd says it will seek a variety of commodities in New Zealand after crossing the Tasman to lodge several applications for exploration ground last week.
"We've of course looked all around the world, but what struck us about New Zealand was its rich mineral province, which has been given a wide berth by many companies because of its strong social and environmental lobby groups," chief executive Andrew Forrest said.
"We happen to be a very strong socially and environmentally responsible company, and when we speak to these strong lobby groups, we don't see any problems," Mr Forrest told media at the Diggers and Dealers conference in Kalgoorlie on Monday.
