NZ LEAD INDIGENOUS GROUP IN ANTI-HOWARD CAMPAIGN

Date: 16 July 2007
Auckland 9am: Anti-John Howard protestors are claiming victory.

Protest rallies were held over the weekend in five different countries, including New Zealand and Australia, against the crackdown on Aboriginal communities.

The organiser of the Wellington rally, Tere Harrison, says they tried to present a statement to Howard to back-off from his "racist" plans, but Consulate staff had been told to snub them.

Harrison says it's a sign that Howard's feeling the pressure. (listen) (listen)

Brisbane Rally Organiser, Sam Watson, says the communities are taking heart from the support of Maori and Pacific people.

He says they feel encouraged, in particular, by the comments of Maori MP Hone Harawira, who last week called Aussie Prime Minister John Howard, a racist. (listen)

John Howard has sent police, soliders and welfare teams into the Northern Territory, saying there's rampant child sex abuse and that it needs to be brought under control.

The countries where the protests were held were Chile, the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
